How to Sit and Stand for Tea Ceremony
By Eri Okada

There are four major points to the tea ceremony. The first is the way to sit down and the way to stand up. The second is the way to bow, and the third is the way to open and close the fusuma door. The last point is the way to walk.

Today, I am going to teach you the way to sit down and stand up for a woman attending a tea ceremony.

First, she should sit "seiza" style with enough space between the knees to fit a fist.

She should rest on her heels and spread the heels open so that the big toes are overlapping each other.

Lastly, she should straighten her spine and bend slightly while drawing in her chin.

When standing up, she should push from the tips of her toes and stand up.
